STORIES FROM THE FIELD

PSACC’s Leadership in the organization is empowering its people through embracing the culture of “listening and asking questions” and giving “feedback”.

The Situation

For a company that has been existing for 46 years, the Board of Directors of PSACC is looking for ways to improve their systems and processes to be better equipped and able to thrive in the competitive environment of the shipping & logistics industry. Alongside the challenging nature of the business and the changing behavior of the market, it is imperative that each individual in the company be abreast with interconnections, enhance decision-making capabilities, and understand the implications of conflicts they face in their day-to-day operations. Such external conditions put in more challenges in the internal aspect of the company.

Philippine Span Asia Carrier Corp. is one of the largest domestic shipping companies in the Philippines in terms of number of vessels and gross tonnage. The Compant provides inter-island cargo services throughout the
major ports and cities in the Philippines.

Action Steps

Taking the TRAIL Executive Coaching Program has the company discover new ways of leading their people and managing their business. The program provided PSACC the platform for more collaboration among the different levels in the organization, i.e. from executives to rank-and-file.  Visualizing the whole system of PSACC and communicating their current reality as a company to the internal stakeholders have become possible through Systems Thinking and its tools. People have started to gain a deeper understanding of the causes of their critical problems.  Identifying the leverages have moved the organization toward possible solutions. The mindset of the executives that solutions must always come from the top management has now shifted to engaging their whole system to participate. Solutions can come from a collective idea as a result of the collaborative perspective of the individuals in the company.

Results

Leadership in the organization is empowering its people through embracing the culture of “listening and asking questions” and giving “feedback”. This is opening a new way to support and manage their supervisors and managers.  It is continuously replicated and practiced down to the rank-and-file; allowing the people to unleash their creativity and bring ways to improve their processes or find solutions to problems.

An innovation project slowly being integrated in the system aims to bring long-term positive impact in their AR.  This will eventually be institutionalized across all units in the PSACC organization.
